The One Show - Create your Career
Interactive Audio-Reactive Shader Art & Global Student Campaign
The One Show - Create your Career is an international campaign created for The One Club for Creativity to promote the world’s premier student award competition, The Young Ones. Organised alongside The One Show and ADC Global in New York, the initiative connects emerging creative talent across 30 countries to top global employers. Under the motto “Turn Passion into Profession,” the campaign demonstrates how student work in illustration, game design, and interaction design transforms directly into a professional creative career.
The campaign reinterprets the iconic One Show Pencil trophy into eight distinct craft styles, bridging linguistic figures of speech with concrete design disciplines. To promote participation in the Portfolio Competition, Serviceplan Group partnered with select international artists to craft bespoke visual motifs paired with action-oriented headlines: Write, Color, Build, Unfold, Cut, Develop, and Draw.
The Technical Challenge
While other campaign disciplines relied on tangible materials like paper overlays, colored pencils, or chalk typography, representing the “Develop” craft demanded absolute digital authenticity. The artwork needed to prove that pure source code could serve as an expressive visual medium. The core engineering obstacle required designing a complex system for real-time audio spectrum analysis and mathematical 3D surface deformation that could render fluidly in real time without pre-baked assets.
The Solution
To establish true architectural purity, STD.DEV bypassed traditional 3D software pipelines entirely, engineering a custom procedural GPU architecture from the ground up. By writing raw mathematical shaders without third-party frameworks, Daniel Kuhnlein constructed a full 3D One Show Pencil using complex Signed Distance Field (SDF) equations. The engine offloaded geometry synthesis and frequency calculations directly to the graphics hardware, evaluating structural displacement on a per-fragment basis.
Impact
This demoscene-inspired execution proved that hardware-native code matches the artistic fidelity of heavy industrial rendering suites. Running live at 60fps, the interactive installation successfully anchored global university exhibitions. The engine’s ultra-high-resolution canvas output generated massive print collateral and out-of-home (OOH) campaign posters worldwide. Ultimately, the campaign successfully drove global participation, connecting emerging creatives from 30 countries with top employers and a chance to exhibit at the United Nations in New York.
To elevate source code from an execution layer into a visual art form, STD.DEV built a standalone algorithmic design pipeline. By marrying real-time auditory signals with procedural rendering fields and high-fidelity output tools, we delivered the creative tech components across two core deliverables:

1. Interactive Audio-Reactive Shader Artwork
Architecting an interactive, sound-reactive 3D representation of the One Show Pencil rendered purely through code, bypassing traditional modeling software and polygon meshes entirely. Using procedural Signed Distance Field (SDF) plane equations in custom shaders, the volumetric geometry is generated dynamically on the graphics processor. Driven by real-time microphone analysis, incoming sound frequencies displace the mathematical surface functions on the fly, while the exact source code compiling the artwork scrolls continuously across the pencil’s faces as a living graphic design layer.
2. Campaign Media Exporter
Building a custom browser-based rendering tool to bypass standard viewport resolution bounds and export ultra-high-resolution assets directly from the GPU buffer. The tool allowed creative teams to freeze live audio-reactive states and instantly render lossless, 24-bit print-ready imagery. This pipeline generated the pristine visual sequences deployed across global print collateral, large-format out-of-home (OOH) billboards, and international exhibition setups.
“Develop your winning formula” demonstrates that creative engineering can elevate technical execution into an expressive artistic medium. By unifying custom shader math, real-time audio reactivity, and standalone high-resolution browser tools, STD.DEV provided emerging talents with a compelling visual metaphor for transforming technical passion into a professional career.
